I served in the Air Force (AF) for 30 years, rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt), a rank reserved for the top 1% of the enlisted force. I spent my first 9 years maintaining and repairing electro-mechanical communications and cryptographic systems equipment. I moved on when computers became more reliable and retrained as a cardiopulmonary laboratory and respiratory therapy technician where I performed diagnostic studies of the heart and lungs and provided respiratory care for inpatients. Six years later, my peers and base leadership requested I serve as a First Sergeant, an assignment reserved for the very best. As First Sergeant, I served as the chief advisor to the commander on all enlisted affairs, and was responsible for the morale, welfare and conduct of every Airman in my assigned organization, I performed these duties over a 6-year period in a communications squadron, an aircraft maintenance squadron, and a logistics squadron. In 2004,  I was selected as the AF-Level Career Field Manager and Consultant to the AF Surgeon General for the Cardiopulmonary Laboratory career field. During my tenure, I set the vision and provided the strategic leadership, which resulted in our respiratory therapy program making history by becoming the only course in the Department of Defense to receive advanced-level accreditation from the National Board of Respiratory Care. Additionally, my expert management of and advocacy for our technicians, led to reduced deployments and gave combatant commanders the ability to surge operations without exhausting this low-density-high-demand resource. I retired from the AF in 2011, and soon after, became my mother's sole caregiver; she has dementia.
