Purpose of Special Education
The purpose of special education, as an integral part of the instructional program of the school district, is
to ensure that all students succeed in developing the skills and abilities necessary to:
1. Master the basic concepts in language, communication, mathematics, and technology;
2. Develop problem-solving and higher level thinking skills;
3. Understand and respect others;
4. Develop skills necessary to be self-directed learners;
5. Develop skills that are practical in daily living; and
6. Enhance and sustain self-esteem through emotional, intellectual, and physical well-being.
All students can learn and all students have a right to an appropriate education that makes it possible for
them to benefit from their school experiences. An appropriate education for students with disabilities is
best achieved through a team effort that includes parents, students, school personnel, and, when
appropriate, representatives from other agencies and organizations with interests in the success of
students with disabilities.
