FAQ

Did West Desert Airpark put in a new runway so jets could land?

  • No. West Desert Airpark built a new runway because the landfill was allowed to increase in altitude thereby blocking the safe approach for aircraft. Fairfield Town and the State of Utah required that a new runway be designed to FAA standards for small aircraft.
  • Small jets can land at West Desert Airpark. But they are not typical.
  • Typical aircraft are single engine, propeller driven aircraft under 12,500lbs.

What is Airport Overlay Zoning?

  • Fairfield Town adopted an Airport Overlay Zone in 2004 to protect Fairfield landowners and residents.
  • The objective is to guide incompatible land uses away from the airport environment and to encourage compatible land uses around the airport (not high density housing).

How does the Airport Overlay Zoning Benefit Me?

  • Development under the overlay should be:
  • Dark Sky compliant
  • Low density residential
  • Preference for large lots
  • Preference for agricultural uses

Why are so many more airplanes flying over the town?

  • Huge increase in student pilot training nationally. Over 90% increase from 2022 to 2023.
  • Spanish Fork Airport Operations increased from 79,726 in 2023 to 118,542 in 2024. Nearly 50% increase.
  • Provo Airport has seen a 481% increase in air traffic since 2020.
  • Provo Airport began directing approaching traffic directly over Fairfield. It’s called an Instrument Approach Fix. Aircraft are instructed to descend over Fairfield enroute to Provo.
  • Air traffic has increased everywhere.
