West County EMS & Fire Protection District offers fire extinguisher classes to those we serve. The District encourages all businesses and homeowners to keep a fire extinguisher available, especially in kitchen and garage areas and offers training to those who may need to use the extinguisher.
It is recommended that each home have at least one dry chemical fire extinguisher located near the kitchen. The extinguisher should be rated for class A, B, and C fires and sized no smaller than a 1A10BC. Class A fires are those that involve paper or wood products. Class B is liquids such as cooking oil, and class C is electric fires.
Recent field testing accompanied by laboratory testing at Consumer Reports shows that the aerosol-type fire extinguishers are not an equivalent replacement for a dry chemical extinguisher.
